Mr. Andrew (Andy) Pernal
Chairman of the Board
Mr. Pernal is President of Strad Energy Services Ltd., an oil and gas services company serving the energy industry in Canada and the United States. Andy holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba and is a Chartered Accountant with wide-ranging senior financial experience in private and public companies including most recently as Chief Financial Officer of Stone Creek Properties and Chief Financial Officer of Craig Media, both based in Calgary. Prior to moving to Calgary in 2003, Andy was Vice President, Finance of MTS Communications in Winnipeg. He also spent eight years with Moffat Communications in various senior financial capacities including Chief Financial Officer until Moffat’s sale to Shaw Communications in 2001. Prior to his experience in industry, Andy spent nine years in public accounting, primarily with Deloitte in Winnipeg. Andy has also been involved with various community and charitable organizations including Board member of Christ the King School and Trustee of Christ the King Parish in Winnipeg, Treasurer of both the Western Canada Aviation Museum and the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba. In Calgary, he has been involved in various volunteer capacities with Springbank Minor Hockey Association. Andy has been a member of the Clear Water Academy Board since 2005 and Chairman since September, 2007.
Mr. Cotter is a partner at Heenan Blaikie LLP, a national law firm. He joined the firm in 2000, and specializes in corporate and securities law, advising several public oil and gas entities on mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, debt and equity financing, trust conversions and reorganizations, corporate governance, regulatory compliance and proxy contests. He also serves as the corporate secretary of two oil and gas companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and one listed on the TSX Venture Exchange, and as secretary of the Canadian Centre for Energy Information. Mr. Cotter has taught as a sessional instructor and guest lecturer at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and Faculty of Management, and as an instructor at the Alberta bar admission courses. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from University of Calgary in 1990, and served articles of clerkship with the Honorable Mr. Justice G.V. LaForest of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1991.
Mr. Ritchie is a Partner in his own executive search firm, Johnstone & Ritchie Professional Search Inc., where he handles the recruitment of senior technical and executive positions primarily for the oil and gas industry. He started his career in 1983 with the Saskatoon Prairieland Exhibition and was promoted to a Division Manager’s role in 1985 where he gained three years experience reporting to a Not-For-Profit Board of Directors. Mr. Ritchie moved to Calgary in 1988 to begin a new career in recruitment with a national firm and within a year, was promoted to Branch Manager. In 1996, he joined the Van Biesen Group and focused on the recruitment of senior professionals for the Oil & Gas Industry. One year later, Mr. Ritchie joined Conroy Partners Limited where he remained for four years. Mr. Ritchie then joined Mr. Trevor Johnstone at Johnstone Associates as the company’s first Associate, in the fall of 2001. The resulting success of working with Mr. Johnstone led to the formation of Johnstone & Ritchie Professional Search Inc. in the summer of 2002.
He received his Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1982 and has been a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) since 2000. Mr. Ritchie has been a volunteer with the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede and the National Foundation for Family Research and Education. He is currently a member of the Human Resources Institute of Alberta.
Mr. Britton, is past Chairman of Bennett Jones LLP of Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto, one of Canada’s largest law firms. As a corporate lawyer, his experience includes corporate mergers, acquisitions, dispositions and reorganizations, banking and all types of financing, private and public, securities matters, utility, real estate and oil and gas and other energy matters, developing and negotiating a wide range of commercial and international contracts. Mr. Britton is a Director of Akita Drilling Ltd., ATCO Electric, ATCO Structures Inc., ATCO Ltd., ATCO Gas, ATCO Frontec, Canadian Utilities Limited, CanUtilities Holdings Ltd., Forest Oil Corporation, Thames Power Limited, Barking Power Limited, Easton United Holdings Ltd., Denver Bronoc’s Football Club and The National Foundation for Family Research and Education. He is Chairman of Hanzell Vineyards Ltd., President of Geary-Market Investment Company Ltd. and Deputy Chairman of Akita Drilling Ltd. Mr. Britton is active in community affairs and his past directorships and affiliations include the Calgary District Foundation, Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta and The Stampeder Football Club.
Mr. Robert (Bob) Christianson
Director and Chair of Capital Campaign Committee
Mr. Christianson is Executive Vice President, Director and Co-Founder of RepeatSeat, a leading global entertainment services company offering unique ticketing solutions. Prior to co-founding RepeatSeat, he was President of Halo Power Inc., a new electrical power generating company. Mr. Christianson has considerable experience in the oil and gas services industry, particularly in the areas of marketing and management. This included time spent in Eastern Europe and China. Mr. Christianson was President of Christianson Pipe Ltd. (CPL), and jointly founded and served in various capacities at Chriscor Industries, International Petroleum Equipment Corporation and IPEC (IPE:TSE), a publicly traded oilfield services company that was subsequently sold to Flint Energy Services. Mr. Christianson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Calgary, and a Masters of Business Administration from the Richard Key School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Mr. Christianson is a member of Regnum Christi (a Catholic lay movement) and has been a Board member of Clear Water Academy since the early years of its founding (Chairman since 1996).
Mr. Kent Wang
Director and Chair of the Finance Committee
Kent and his wife Kathy own and operate Olaf Packaging Group, a mid-sized food packaging company which services retailers and food processors in Western Canada. Mr. Wang graduated with a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1994, then articled at Price Waterhouse where he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1996. He continued with Price Waterhouse until 1998 in order to gain experience working in Central America. Mr. Wang then held senior roles in finance and operations at Loblaw Companies until leaving to join Olaf Packaging in 2004. Kent joined the Board of Directors of Clear Water Academy in 2007 as a Director and member of the Finance Committee. Kent and his wife Kathy have three children; the two older children are enrolled at Clear Water Academy, with the third set to enroll in 2011.
Mrs. Bernhardt was Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Customer Service with Axia SuperNet until 2004. Prior to this, she was Vice President/General Manager of Sales & Technical Support at Group Telecom; she also held the position of Controller of Business Sales, and Director of Market Management, at Telus Communications. Mrs. Bernhardt has taken roles making her responsible for leading the development of new business strategies and teams, leading to significant business change. She has extensive marketing, finance and sales management experience primarily in telecommunications, both nationally and internationally. Mrs. Bernhardt holds a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of Alberta, 1984, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Toronto, 1987.
Most recently, Mrs. Bernhardt led a senior Marketing course at the Haskayne School of Business, developed a strategic business plan for a start-up service company, and has volunteered her time and expertise to charitable organizations in both leading and support roles – including Clear Water Academy’s Annual Gala Fundraiser Chair for two years. Cheryl and her husband, David, have two children attending Clear Water Academy since 2004.
Fr. Jon Budke, LC
Director and Chair of Education/Formation and Communications Committee
Father Budke is an ordained Legionary of Christ Roman Catholic priest and provides leadership to members of Regnum Christi and the Legion of Christ. He is a Director of the Regnum Christi Movement. He is Assistant of Apostolate to the Territorial Director of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi Movement where his area of responsibility includes, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho and the four western provinces of Canada. Father Budke is also Rector of Legionaries of Christ Centre of Apostolate in San Jose, California. Prior to this, he was Chaplain of Woodmount Academy, Maryland and spiritual assistant for Regnum Christi in Maryland, Virgina, and Washington DC. Over the years, Father Budke has been actively involved in fundraising and Youth Programs with the Legion of Christ. Father Budke holds bachelor degrees in Philosophy and Theology from Pontifical University Regina Aposotolorum, Rome, Italy.
Fr. Jose Felix Ortega, LC
Director
Born in Valencia, Spain, Father Ortega was ordained a Legionary of Christ Roman Catholic priest in Rome on January 2nd 2001. Father Ortega’s education includes a Master’s in Philosophy, a Bachelor’s in Theology, a Diploma in Bioethics, a Masters in Accounting and a Master’s in Financing.
Father Ortega has held many administrative positions for the Legionaries of Christ in Rome, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. Currently he is residing in Thornwood, New York, serving as the Territorial Administrator for the Congregation in the United States.
Fr. Anthony Bannon, LC
Director
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Father Anthony Bannon entered the Legion of Christ in 1964 and coursed his studies for the priesthood in Ireland, Spain and Italy, completing his apostolic internship in Mexico.
Ordained on Christmas Eve, 1975, Father Bannon has worked in North America continually since April 1976, as Vocation Director for the Legionaries of Christ. He has been Novice Instructor, Rector of the Novitiate in Connecticut for 12 years, followed by 16 years as Territorial Director. Father Bannon is particularly interested in education at all levels, having participated in the foundation of six seminaries, 12 schools, the Institute for Psychological Sciences and the University of Sacramento. He also founded National Consultants for Education, and a website for Vocations (www.vocation.com).
Mr. Doug Koop
Director
Mr. Doug Koop is the Broker / Owner of RE/MAX Realty Professionals, a large Real Estate Brokerage in Calgary. Mr. Koop graduated from the University of Calgary in 1984 and entered into the business world as a partner in R-Mer Impact Devices, a start up bullet proofing business. After several successful years the company was sold and he joined Ikon Office Solutions an international Fortune 500 company. Doug moved from sales to management positions and finally to the position of Vice President of Sales. He sat on many industry advisory boards during his 18 year tenure including Ikon’s Sales and Marketing Council and the North American Graphics Council. Doug left Ikon Office Solutions in 2005 when he purchased RE/MAX Realty Professionals. Doug is married to his wife Kathy, they have two children Sarah and Joshua. Both Sarah and Joshua have attended Clearwater Academy for several years beginning at the pre-k level.
Mr. Dan Britton
Director
Dan Britton is the founder and President of Chariot Carriers Inc., a market leading designer, manufacturer, and distributor of innovative sporting child carrier products. Chariot Carriers is a Calgary based company with production in Calgary and Asia, and sales in over 20 countries worldwide. Dan graduated with a Bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Calgary in 1989. Throughout and after university Dan competed internationally as a triathlete, which included extensive travel and participation in 1991 in both the short course (i.e. Olympic length) world championships in Australia and the Ironman long course world championships in Hawaii. During this period Dan combined his passion for health & fitness and his interest in making products to conceive of and start-up Chariot Carriers. Since its inception in 1992, Chariot Carriers has been recognized through awards of excellence in the areas of product design, exporting, and entrepreneurship.
Dan and his wife Jodie have been involved with Clear Water Academy for many years. Currently three of their five children are students at the school, and they are looking forward to their younger two attending in the near future.
