Students recognize and express explicit meaning and begin to be aware of some implicit meaning and attitudes when making inferences and deductions. Students begin to talk about author’s intention and give personal responses, supporting these with reference to the text. They locate and use ideas and information, ant they are able to use technology to support their writing and research.
• Reading skills.
• Word recognition and vocabulary.
• Spelling and Phonics.
• Reading comprehension.
• Literature.
- Describe the motivation of major and minor characters in a selection.
- Recognize, analyze and evaluate an author’s use of literary elements.
- Understand the relationships among story elements.
- Analyze classic and contemporary literature selections.
• Use a variety of criteria to evaluate information.
• Use mechanical and grammatical conventions in written compositions.
• Develop the ability to make and shape text in order to communicate meaning in written language, appropriate to the context, purpose reader, and audience.
• Handwriting.
• Mechanics, grammar and usage.
• Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of composition and the writing process.
- Students compose independently at this stage. The ideas are often sustained and developed, making use of appropriate detail and vocabulary to enhance meaning The writing demonstrates and ability to use appropriate form and style and shows an awareness of audience. Syntax and punctuation are used with increasing proficiency and more complex words are included in students’ own writing, and they are spelled correctly. The writing process is done with greater independence. Students plan, revise, and redraft to improve accuracy and enhance meaning. Handwriting is clear and legible.
• Composition.
• Writing Skills
• Gather and use information for research purposes
- Conduct research in the library and on the computer, independently using supplied databases and guided Internet tools. Periodicals, almanacs, and other special references are becoming more widely used at this level. The ability to take notes using and outline format and writing from an outline is developing. Students are able t compare and contrast, summarize and paraphrase, and evaluate many of the resources found.

MATHEMATICS

In mathematics, Grades 6 – 8 students the following critical components are used to describe mathematics in a broad way in order to establish connections among the Mathematic Strands.
• Change – identification of changing quantities.
• Constancy – defining aspects of stability, symmetry, steady state, and conservation.
• Dimension – measurement concepts of size and scale.
• Number – an intuitive understanding number sense and meaning of number operations improves mental math.
• Pattern – a systematic understanding of patterns underlying all math concepts.
• Quantity – a system of coding measure and ordering things.
• Relationships – the connections between and among things
• Shape – central to geometry and number networks
• Uncertainty – chance, errors and data measurement

Grade 7
• Extension of Grade 6 concepts to learn: exponents, powers, base, co-efficient, scientific notation, fraction operations and equivalency, decimals, integers, Circles, angles, time zones.

Grade 8
• Extension of Grades 6 and 7 concepts to learn: positives, negatives, ratios, rationals, irrationals, square roots, linear equations, Pythagorean relationships, angles, scaling, proportions.
