Knights of the Altar at Clear Water Academy
The Knights of the Altar (KOTA) is a Catholic program at Clear Water Academy that helps students grow in faith through brotherhood. Membership in KOTA encourages them to deepen their relationship with God while learning to serve reverently at the altar. Established in 2023, the program now includes more than 50 active, members who participate in this meaningful apostolate.
Our chapter brings together boys from Grades 4 to 12 who generously dedicate their time and talents to serving at Mass and other liturgical celebrations with dignity and devotion. The program is guided by our school chaplains and faculty, who accompany the boys in both their spiritual formation and practical training.
Serving with Reverence
Members of KOTA are trained to assist priests during Mass and other liturgical celebrations, learning to carry out their responsibilities with care, dignity, and devotion. Through their formation, students learn:
Reverence
Serve the Mass with attentiveness and dignity.
Catechesis
Understand the meaning and importance of the liturgy.
Spirituality
Grow in personal prayer and devotion.
Stewardship
Develop a spirit of service within the Church.
Many participants also discover a deeper openness to discerning their vocation through this close experience with the life of the Church.
Through the Knights of the Altar program, students grow not only in their understanding of the liturgy but also in character, discipline, and faith. By serving at the altar, they learn that leadership begins with humble service, and that their gifts can be used to build up the Church and their community.
Students are divided into two groups according to their stage of formation:

Elementary Knights (Grades 4-6)
Younger members are introduced to the foundations of altar serving and the Catholic faith through:
- Learning the basic elements of the Mass
- Activities that deepen understanding of Catholic beliefs
- Games and engaging faith-based experiences
- Building friendship and fraternity
Secondary Knights (Grade 7-12)
Older students deepen their formation and take on greater responsibility within the chapter. They are encouraged to:
- Develop leadership skills
- Mentor and assist younger altar servers
- Participate in altar-serving during more complex liturgical celebrations
- Reflect on deeper aspects of faith and vocation

Brotherhood in Action
Our KOTA meetings go beyond serving at the altar. Younger Knights build essential liturgical skills through engaging activities, while more experienced members grow as leaders by mentoring others and helping organize events. The program blends practical training, spiritual formation, and fun activities—such as Nerf gun battles, soccer, and team games—so students can grow in faith, service, and friendship. Meetings take place biweekly during lunch. Members may also take part in an annual retreat featuring activities like bowling, spiritual talks, and opportunities for service. Throughout the year, Knights are involved in apostolic outreach and friendship-building activities.
This approach reflects our school mission: forming Christian leaders who will transform society. Through learning, service, leadership, and fellowship, the Knights of the Altar offer a meaningful experience for students at every stage of their journey.
As Knights grow in skill, commitment, and leadership, they may advance through different ranks within the program. Each year, our chaplains lead a promotion ceremony inspired by the historic knighting traditions of the Church, in which students symbolically become Knights in the service of Christ the King. This ceremony highlights the values of faith, honor, responsibility, and service, reminding students that their role at the altar is ultimately a mission to serve God and His Church.
At our school, the Knights of the Altar follow a rank system based on experience and skill in altar serving, fostering growth and encouraging development. The following outlines the ranks at Clear Water Academy:
When a boy of the school is willing to serve at the altar he may join as an apprentice.
He becomes a Page once the apprentice has demonstrated consistent commitment to service.
Full membership is granted with a certificate and a commitment to uphold the pledge to serve at the altar.
Responsible for more advanced roles in altar serving, such as MC and thurifer, and have demonstrated commitment to the program.
The highest rank, responsible for leading and mentoring younger members, and carrying the greatest duties and responsibilities.
